Some 15 years ago, I was searching for accommodation in the capital area. However, I could not afford a studio nor was I granted a student apartment. I ended up living in a shared apartment at that time with almost strangers. Those room mates are now some of my closest friends. The location was good, we had a swimming pool, gym and low rent allowing a relatively good living standard. The experience was positive and outcome probably a lifetime friendship that I give great value to.

The megatrend in Helsinki metropolitan has been for decades that ever more singles are packed into centrally located studios thus leading to high rent prices out of reach for many even though having a job.

On a rainy day in September 2015 the first idea of doing something different on the overheated real estate market was born. When studios are ever harder to get hold of at the same time there are large flats available with reasonable price: These have often very little utilization rate, even though some private persons rent out extra rooms with varying quality.

I saw there is a real need for affordable yet well located apartments. The solution was to provide communal living in these large apartments. I decided to establish MaiHaus and differentiate by providing quality and service to exceed people's expectations.  Now we can congratulate ourselves for doing a fantastic job in establishing the business. This is just the beginning however, and based on our customers' feedback, we will continue our growth and fine tuning the concept.

Our mission is also aligned with the larger targets of the society. Through flat sharing, the utilization rate of a limited volume of housing square metres in the capital area increases without building new houses and waiting for new city plans! Less tax payers' money is spent on housing benefits and businesses will have better possibilities to hire lower income people when there are sustainable alternatives for affordable accommodation close to their work. For students, affordable living gives them a chance to focus and speed up their studies and enjoy some spare time as well.

At some point in my life, I felt that I need something new and fresh to boost my career and my personal development. My preferred destination to achieve that goal was Finland.

Moving away from your childhood home is a big step for everyone. It’s even bigger when the distance between your new home and your childhood home is thousands of kilometres – 2500 to be exact.

Therefore, I found MaiHaus on the internet and reserved a room in their apartment. After I came to the apartment I was delighted with a welcoming atmosphere and the condition of the whole apartment. Soon after, I met the owner of the company (Bo) and I presented myself to him. From that moment, our friendship has started. Very soon after I ended up as an employee of the company and I’m happy that I chose to continue my professional development in MaiHaus company since it is a modern, creative, and multicultural company and I would recommend MaiHaus company and our apartments with a great enthusiasm to all.
